For a film production class I’m taking, I was required to make a short film. This is really my first attempt at such a project. Overall I’m pretty happy with the results considering the time crunch I was under. Yes there are some things I don’t like and would do differently, but overall It’s not too bad for my first attempt. Everything was shot on the Nikon D7000 and GoPro HD Hero and edited in Final Cut Pro X (iMovie Pro). I really need to do some more of these. Enjoy…
I decided to attempt a time lapse of our Latest snow storm. I put my D300 on a tripod and used the interval timer to take a shot every 30 seconds. The video came out pretty good. I would have liked to have made it longer with more frames, but I ran out of batteries. I used manual focus and auto exposure. I would have liked to have locked the exposure, but it would have been way off when the sun rose.
We tried to cram a lot of information into our behind the scenes Corvette shoot video, but had to leave a few things out. So after being inspired by http://fstoppers.com, myself and Thomas Woodson decided to collaborate on a very large automotive shoot and film the whole thing to submit in the Fstoppers contest. We’re both getting into automotive photography, and perfecting our craft shoot by shoot.
The video is not only meant to give you a look into our shoot, but to show you how we shot the images. We want to give you every technical detail on our photo shoot and not hold anything back.
We had a blast on this shoot and video production and hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it!
Right now we just have the video for the contest entry done, but we plan on releasing a series of videos detailing every aspect of this shoot, so check back often. I spent so much time editing this video, that I haven’t really had time to edit my images. I will post the final images from the shoot as soon as possible. In the meantime, check out our contest entry video!

F-150 Shoot 2I decided to tackle photographing the truck again. This time I set out to get two different images. I wanted one shot of the front of my truck up on some sort of hill, and one of the interior. I think I came out with two pretty cool shots.
Like my other automotive shots, I took several images with different lighting angles and combined them together. With this technique, I can have a well lit foreground and a pitch black background. I like the effect this gives. This approach was used on both the interior and exterior shots. I planned on adding in a nice landscape in the windshield of the truck, but couldn’t find a suitable one in my library. Hopefully I can take a nice shot to put there, but the gradient works for now.
I also decided to attempt a behind the scenes video from the shoot. I got the idea from the folks over at http://FStoppers.com who showcase and produce behind the scenes videos of photo shoots. This video isn’t even remotely close to their standards, but it gave me a chance to practice my video editing skills. I don’t have very good video gear, but I’m going to try to produce some better videos soon. Myself and fellow friend and photographer Thomas Woodson are going to try to make a killer video of one of our shoots, so I need lots and lots of practice. Sorry for the blurry overhead shot. The camera I used was a crappy point and shoot with horrible auto focus. I was going to reshoot it, but the battery died.
Continuing with my automotive shoots, I decided to photograph my dad’s BMW 550i. This was more of a creative shoot than the last time. Myself and fellow photographer Thomas Woodson set out to try some experimental shooting techniques. After shooting for nearly three hours I came out with only a few working images. I put in a lot of time working on these shots, but am very happy with the outcome. (Click on images to enlarge)
I recently had the opportunity to do a collaborative shoot with my friend and fellow photographer Thomas Woodson, who also happens to be a cyclist for the University of South Carolina. Being a cyclist, he told me there was a race in Spartanburg and that we should shoot it. I jumped at the chance for many reasons. I've always liked to shoot sports, but don't get the chance to very often. I have also never shot cycling, and I'm always looking to improve my photography and try new techniques.
The shoot went pretty well, for never having shot cycling before.We started shooting around 5:00 or so. At that time the sun was still out in full force. There was really too much light to try some of the techniques I wanted to. The pro race started at 8:00. By then the lighting was near perfect. I believe I nearly shot the whole race at f/2.8 to achieve the DOF I was looking for. At one point I lowered my shutter speed and attempted some panning shots. These probably came out the best. I can attest to the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8, because it is a champ for fast sports!
All in all, the day went very well. I came out with some decent images and had a good time. I've posted a few of the images in a Flickr set. You can view the images in the viewer below. Enjoy!
I just got back from my niece Carly's T-Ball game. I was looking forward to the game, not only to watch her play, but to shoot some pictures. I've always loved shooting sports, and haven't had the chance to do so in quite some time. The images turned out pretty good, though the lighting at home plate was a little bad. Here are the images:
I am expanding my photography by becoming a strobist, or at least trying to be one. Here are some images where I've used my strobe, that can't call any other of my sets home.
