Yes, It's true! Our great little city, Greenville, SC, is a candidate for Google Fiber. In short, Google Fiber is ultra-fast fiber optic Internet. Google is looking for a test market to try out their latest creation.
What exactly does this mean for Greenville? Well, Google is offering to install all infrastructure for the service free of charge. A project this size will undoubtedly incur a huge cost, which Google will cover. They say the consumer price for the service will be competitive.
Google is looking for a city to test its little project and Greenville is making a huge push to be the one. To be honest, I'm shocked. I am completely thrilled that our awesome city has come together for an extraordinary opportunity such as this. I love Greenville, there's no place I'd rather be (honestly) and I see so much potential for this city. Just look at our downtown for an example. We are growing, and getting this blessing from Google would put this city on the map! We have a growing art, tech, and music scene here and people that would appreciate and take advantage of this gift if it were made available.
I know several people fed up with their ISP. Charter has had such a stronghold on Greenville for so long, people don't know what real Internet is. For me, I jumped at the chance to get AT&T U-Verse when it came to town. I love it, having a consistent 18 meg Internet is awesome. I feel for the people that don't have ISP choices. I'm all for competition, it's the American way!
Besides making Greenville the coolest place on earth, getting Google fiber will stimulate our economy and attract new industry. The possibilities are endless if we can show the world how tech savvy we are.
If you have any pride for our city, or if you're a close neighbor please, please root for us. Put banners up on your sites, tweet about it, make YouTube videos, flood the net with stuff. Let's make the largest community driven ad campaign and show Google what we're all about!
